The OED speculates that 'serif' was a back-formation from 'sanserif'. The oldest citations in the Oxford English Dictionary ( OED) are 1830 for 'serif' and 1841 for 'sans serif'. The printer Thomas Curson Hansard referred to them as "ceriphs" in 1825. In 1827, Greek scholar Julian Hibbert printed with his own experimental uncial Greek types, remarking that the types of Giambattista Bodoni's Callimachus were "ornamented (or rather disfigured) by additions of what believe type-founders call syrifs or cerefs". The standard also proposed that 'surripsis' may be a Greek word derived from σῠν- ( 'syn-', "together") and ῥῖψῐς ( 'rhîpsis', "projection"). The book The British Standard of the Capital Letters contained in the Roman Alphabet, forming a complete code of systematic rules for a mathematical construction and accurate formation of the same (1813) by William Hollins, defined 'surripses', usually pronounced "surriphs", as "projections which appear at the tops and bottoms of some letters, the O and Q excepted, at the beginning or end, and sometimes at each, of all". The origin of the word 'serif' is obscure, but apparently is almost as recent as the type style. Another theory is that serifs were devised to neaten the ends of lines as they were chiselled into stone. The explanation proposed by Father Edward Catich in his 1968 book The Origin of the Serif is now broadly but not universally accepted: the Roman letter outlines were first painted onto stone, and the stone carvers followed the brush marks, which flared at stroke ends and corners, creating serifs. Serifs originated from the first official Greek writings on stone and in Latin alphabet with inscriptional lettering-words carved into stone in Roman antiquity. Some typography sources refer to sans-serif typefaces as "grotesque" (in German, grotesk) or "Gothic", and serif typefaces as " roman". A typeface or "font family" making use of serifs is called a serif typeface (or serifed typeface), and a typeface that does not include them is sans-serif. In typography, a serif ( / ˈ s ɛr ɪ f/) is a small line or stroke regularly attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter or symbol within a particular font or family of fonts. For other uses, see Serif (disambiguation). For the software company, see Serif Europe. His background as a writing master is evident in th.This article is about the font characteristic. The result was a typeface that reflected Baskerville's ideals of perfection, where he chose simplicity and quiet refinement. Baskerville's typeface was the culmination of a larger series of experiments to improve legibility which also included paper making and ink manufacturing. These changes created a greater consistency in size and form. The curved strokes are more circular in shape, and the characters became more regular. He increased the contrast between thick and thin strokes, making the serifs sharper and more tapered, and shifted the axis of rounded letters to a more vertical position. The Baskerville typeface is the result of John Baskerville's intent to improve upon the types of William Caslon. Baskerville is classified as a transitional typeface, positioned between the old style typefaces of William Caslon, and the modern styles of Giambattista Bodoni and Firmin Didot. The 'Canada' wordmark Baskerville is a transitional serif typeface designed in 1757 by John Baskerville (1706-1775) in Birmingham, England. In another example, if Lens recognizes a barcode or text in an image (for example, a product name or a book title), Lens may return a Google Search results page for the object. Lens may also rely on available signals, like the product’s user ratings, to return such results. For example, if an image contains a specific product - like jeans or sneakers - Lens may return results providing more information about that product, or shopping results for the product. In other cases, when Lens is confident it understands which object in the picture you’re interested in, Lens will return Search results related to the object. In this case, Lens might only show the result for a German shepherd, which Lens has judged to be most visually similar. Let’s say that Lens is looking at a dog that it identifies as probably 95% German shepherd and 5% corgi. Lens may sometimes narrow these possibilities to a single result. When analyzing an image, Lens often generates several possible results and ranks the probable relevance of each result. Lens may also use other helpful signals, such as words, language, and other metadata on the image’s host site, to determine ranking and relevance. Lens also uses its understanding of objects in your picture to find other relevant results from the web. Lens compares objects in your picture to other images, and ranks those images based on their similarity and relevance to the objects in the original picture. His jaw felt broken, and his eye was swelling. Then the world exploded in a blast of pain. He could watch his babys birth, his daughter grow up. He would be hurt badly, but he could hug Emily. John inched upward.Īgainst the sheer impossibility of it all, John might get out. “My legs are killing me.”Īfter about 20 minutes, Ryan raised his voice to yell. I can’t believe I’m upside down,” he said. But he wasn’t bleeding, and his eyes were a bright, vibrant brown. His face was muddy and his eyes were red from crying. When they lifted John up for the third time, Ryan stuck his head in the crack to give John his first glimpse of another person in hours. Ryan yelled for the teams to lower him, to give him a rest. With each tug, he moved a little farther. I need your help, I need you to make sure you are pushing with your hands.Īnd John’s body lifted out of the crevice. Ryan tried to ready John for what was about to happen. Closest to John, the rope went through a natural arch in the wall just above the crack where he was trapped. The rope was strung through nearly 15 tandem pulleys drilled into the wall of the cave. But rescuers finally had the power to pull him out. 25, and John had been trapped for 19 hours. When the pulley system was ?nished, it was 4 p.m. “I love you! I love you! Tell Lizzie I love her! I’ll get out, and I’ll come see you!” John yelled, and Ryan could hear he was crying. “I love you! Just keep fighting!” Emily ’s voice crackled through the box. Tears streamed down the rescuer ‘s face as Emily shouted to John from the chaotic surface to the musty, cramped tunnel. Lying in the dark tunnel, Ryan stretched his long arm out as far as he could with the little black box. They strung the line 400 feet from the entrance to John’s tunnel, then gave a speaker to Ryan. Salt Lake County crews brought a telecom, a set of two radios that transmitted by way of a cable line. Rescue commanders on the surface also knew how much thoughts of his family helped John in his dark prison. The baby was due on Ryan’s birthday, June 13. John told Ryan about his wife, Emily, about their life together in Virginia, about their 1-year-old daughter, and his child on the way. The best way to bring him back from that abyss, Ryan discovered, was to ask about his young family. John oscillated between calm, coherent conversation to helplessly thrashing his legs in sheer panic. “Well, when we get you out of here, I’ll be your workout buddy,” he said. “It would be so much easier for you guys to get me out of here if I wasn’t so fat.” The two talked about their missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and spoke Spanish together - Ryan had served a Spanish-speaking mission in Texas, John in Ecuador. John, a devout Mormon, had connected with several of the volunteers who had tried to free him through a shared faith. To remind him he wasn’t in the hole alone. He brought a water pouch filled with Gatorade and stretched the attached tube down to John so he could drink. When Ryan reached John, he loosened the knots earlier rescuers had tied around his legs. “Why did you guys put me here?” John replied. I don’t want to be on my head,” John told Ryan when he arrived. The plan was, rescuers thought, their last, best hope: John was beginning to lose touch with reality in the darkness. They had medicine ready to give John intravenously immediately after they freed him. Next the crew would pull as hard as it could. Ryan would then try to shift John from the 8 1/2 inch wide side of the crevice where he was stuck, moving him to the slightly wider side of the fissure. When the new system - drilled into the rock - was finished, the team would inch John up. Ryan would stay with John during the reconstruction effort. They initially created the pulley system using climbing cams, but the anchors couldn’t get a strong grip in the layer of powdery calcite that coated the cave’s walls. Shortly after he arrived, rescue crews got a set of heavy-duty air chisels and drills they would use to rebuild a pulley system designed to pull John out of the fissure. As scary and depressing as he felt John’s predicament was, he had a job to do. With fluids pooling dangerously in his head and lungs, the shock of the injury could kill him. John had been trapped nearly upside down for 12 hours. The crevice was at the end of a cramped tunnel, and rescuers had realized hours earlier that extracting John’s 6-foot, 200-pound body would likely break his legs. But when he reached the narrow crevice trapping 26-year-old John Jones in Utah County’s Nutty Putty Cave, he had to fight back tears. Trust us to be your reliable partner for all your mat needs. This game isn't interested in teaching you math or state capitals. While Myst sometimes gets pigeonholed as edutainment, solving these puzzles takes only patience and experimentation. To move forward, you must open audio locks, ride elevators, and navigate an underwater roller-coaster maze in a golden submarine-among other challenges. Your path is often barred by puzzles in the form of complex contraptions. In each Age, you must find red or blue pages ripped from magical books and return to Myst island. While the game's story is key to its final conundrum, the puzzles and fantastical locales are the real draw. Exploring the rest of the small island reveals more strange monuments and eventually portals in the form of books to four other worlds called Ages.Īlong the way, you learn about the former inhabitants of the island and the deadly, family plot that ensnared them all. Ahead of you is an enormous gear, and to your right a half-submerged sailing ship. Immediately, the mysterious whimsy of this place is on display. Myst opens with you materializing on the dock of the titular Myst island. There are sequels to Myst, but these aren't them. The platform and visuals might change, but the locations, puzzles, and story are the same. It's important to understand that all of these games, and the one reviewed here, are functionally identical to the original 1993 Myst. Last year, a totally revamped Myst made its VR debut on the Oculus Quest, but the promise of a higher-quality release for PC was still dangling. realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, which I reviewed on the Nintendo Switch, lets you freely roam around instead of clicking through still images. In the intervening decades, developer Cyan revamped the graphics and game engine to make Myst more accessible. Even PCMag was enamored with its 1994 release for Windows. Although it was little more than static images navigated by pointing and clicking, it nonetheless captured the imagination of millions of players. Myst shirked fast-paced action, and instead encouraged you to explore its world at your own pace by removing time limits, enemies, player death, and combat. It didn't debut on a home console game system, but rather as one of the first CD-ROM games to hit the PC market. Myst originally debuted in 1993, sparking a cultural moment unusual for any video game, especially for a game like Myst. Available on numerous platforms and with a reasonable $29.99 sticker price, getting into Myst has never been easier, and the experience has never been better. The lush environments have never been so enticing to explore, and virtual reality (VR) offers a new way to soak yourself in the game's rich atmosphere. While the game has been re-released with tweaks and updates and given funny names like "realMyst," this edition is intended to be so definitive that it is simply called "Myst," and it lives up to the consequently high expectations. I don’t know for sure if that’s what happened to this one, but it’s the most common failure on these engines, so it’s a good bet. If the problem is ignored, the engine isn’t long for this world. This, of course, contaminates the oil, making it slugdy and ineffective at its one job – lubrication. The water pump is mounted inside the V between the cylinder banks, driven by the timing chain, and its gasket has a tendency to fail and allow coolant into the oil. The trouble here is that the Chrysler 2.7 liter V6 has an Achilles heel, and it’s a doozy. The Sebring GTC is so rare that I actually had trouble finding any information on it even Allpar, the great repository of Chrysler lore, barely mentions it. The only “cloud car” variant with a manual that I knew of was the base-model Dodge Stratus and Plymouth Breeze, with the Neon’s 2.0 liter four and a five-speed. I had absolutely no idea this car existed, and I’m kind of a Mopar guy. And in this version, the GTC, that 200 horsepower engine fed the front wheels through a five-speed stick. For its second generation, the Sebring convertible gained a stiffer structure and improved suspension, making it a decent-handling car, and a serious boost in power from Chrysler’s new 2.7 liter V6. 2003 Chrysler Sebring GTC – $1,000īut maybe, just maybe, if more enthusiasts had known about this version, the Sebring could have gotten more respect. Which got me thinking: Could I find another car that’s a rare and special version of an otherwise humdrum car to pit against it? As it turns out, I could. Did you have any idea there was a “ Holy Grail” version of the Chrysler Sebring convertible? Neither did I. I immediately consulted our in-house Sebring expert, S.W. When I was looking for cars the other day, I happened upon something I’d never seen before – a Chrysler Sebring with a very rare option package. This is a great two-car garage for someone. Thinking about it now, that’s the right call. Lots of commenters wanted a “Both” choice, and I actually did consider adding one in when I was making the poll. But honestly, these are both cool little cars that deserve good homes. Looks like the boxy off-roader wins it by a nose. But before we do, let’s see which Suzuki you picked: Happy Friday, Autopians! On today’s episode, we’re looking at two cars that look like nothing special at all – unless you show them to the right people, and then those people get all excited. |
